Divorcing During a Pandemic- Is this a Bad Idea?
1. Covid-19 has put a lot of relationships to the test. Make sure it is your marriage that is the problem and not other issues before you consider getting a divorce. Divorce is hard and it should be the last resort.
2. Before you consider divorce try marriage counseling and try everything you can before pulling the trigger on a divorce. Most therapists are seeing patients virtually through Zoom, Tele-med or some other online service.
3. Divorce costs money and if you don’t have a lot of extra cash right now this could be a financial strain to you and your family during this time.
4. Communication is the key during this stressful time. This is difficult especially in marriages where lack of communication was one of the issues that contributed to the divorce. But it is even more important if you decide to move forward with the divorce during the pandemic.
5. Communicating about what each of you feel, what each of you need, and what needs to be done. If there are children then providing each other with updates about schooling and coordinating schedules is more important than ever.
6. While it is possible to navigate through a simple divorce on your own it is helpful to have an outside party involved to provide guidance and instruction. Because you are probably spending a lot of time together in the house it is helpful to have that third party influence to help guide the process. This can be a family law mediator or a settlement minded family law attorney.
7. If it is impossible for the two of you to remain in the same household during your divorce process during the pandemic then you should explore alternative housing options that make sense financially. Be realistic about what you can afford and cooperate with each other to facilitate this transition. Be careful as moving out of the family residence can have some far-reaching consequences later in the case. Discuss this option with an advisor before moving out of the family home.
8. Make sure that you have cash, bank accounts and credit cards in your name and that you have access to cash and credit. Just because your name is on the credit card doesn’t mean that you can’t have your card cancelled and access to credit denied.
9. Work together cooperatively but smartly during this pandemic time. It is difficult to get court hearings on a timely basis so many things have to be done cooperatively or through mediation.
10. There is nothing wrong with asking for help! This situation is very hard for most people- especially if you are contemplating or planning on a divorce. This too shall pass and is temporary. But don’t hesitate to ask for help. Therapists, mediators, attorneys, family law forensic accountants are available to help.
